Central Lanes awarded with 'Le Grand Prix Européen de l’urbanisme'

The regeneration of the Central Lanes between square De Brouckère and square Fontainas, as part of a wider pedestrian zone, has been awarded during the XIth European Urban and Regional Planning Awards. An initiative of the European Council of Spatial Planners - Conseil européen des urbanistes (ECTP-CEU).

The international jury stated that "the plans for 'a new heart of Brussels' are a convincing demonstration of spatial planning initiating a process of change in several steps towards the complete renewal of a major urban centre. The plans comprise an ambitious endeavor to rid the centre of Brussels of car traffic which will be diverted to the city’s ring road system, and to make it an attractive space for pedestrians and cyclists."

The jury hopes that this project will inspire colleagues and decision makers and anyone else with an interest in the development of our future communities and environments in a sustainable and survivable direction for all.
