The restoration works on the iconic roof of Roosenberg Abbey are now well underway. Commissioned by Herita, SumProject - acting as both design and executive architect - is responsible for the restoration strategy and the supervision of the works. Phase 1, which includes the restoration of the roof over the cloister, meeting rooms, and the caretaker’s residence, is nearing completion.
Precision and Craftsmanship
An essential part of this restoration is the meticulous replacement of the characteristic stoneware tiles. As the existing tiles have reached the end of their life cycle, they are being dismantled and replaced with newly manufactured ceramic tiles, specifically tailored to match the original profile, size, and laying pattern.
Modernization and Sustainability
These restoration works also provide an opportunity to improve the roof’s energy efficiency by installing new, high-performance insulation. At the same time, long-standing issues with rainwater drainage are being resolved. The roof is being restored to its former glory by removing several unsuccessful repair layers from previous interventions.
Additionally, the integration of a green roof over the cloister is planned - a forward-looking measure that contributes to a sustainable future for the abbey.
Looking Ahead
In the second half of 2026, Phase 2 will commence, focusing on the restoration of the high roofs, as well as the roofs of the church and the bell tower.
