Barco, Kortrijk

Following a competition, won in 2012, SumResearch proposed a masterplan for the former industrial site Barco in Kortrijk. Several workshops with the client and the city authorities helped to combine different views and create a vision shared by all parties.

The project, developed by SumProject, proposes to subdivide the block into several entities in order to seemlessly integrate the new volumes into its urban fabric and combine different typologies of housing in a more natural way.

The site will eventually contain 81 appartements and 49 houses in a peaceful, green environment. A large part of the parking lots is located underground. Priority is given to pedestrians and the streets are developed as a woonerf.

The project shows how to revitalize former industrial sites in order to integrate them into their (in this case residential) urban context.
