Restoration Abdij Roosenberg Waasmunster

Since September 2023, the non-profit organization Herita has held the long-term lease for the Roosenberg Abbey site in Waasmunster. This Gesamtkunstwerk is a remarkable addition to the portfolio managed by Herita as it develops its "National Trust of Flanders." Despite the fact that Roosenberg Abbey is a relatively young monument - designed in 1972-1973 and consecrated on August 6, 1975 - essential works are required. The current proposal for the restoration of the roofs represents a crucial first step in this process.

The abbey site is exceptional due to its architectural and artistic qualities, as well as its spiritual and cultural-historical dimensions; consequently, it is protected as a listed monument. Key elements emphasizing the abbey's value include its rarity, integrity and recognisability, representativeness, ensemble value, and contextual value. This unique context demands a specialized approach to the building.

SUM has a profound connection with Roosenberg Abbey. Commissioned by the Franciscan Sisters of Mary, SUM drafted the heritage management plan, which was approved by the Flanders Heritage Agency in 2021. The management plan and subsequent inspections by Monumentenwacht clearly indicate that a comprehensive restoration is urgent. The overall condition of the abbey is currently described as mediocre, an assessment closely linked to the state of the roof and the drainage systems. The restoration of the roofs is an essential phase within this larger project.
