SumProject and B. Van der Wee Architects are very pleased to announce a new project for the UNESCO World Heritage site Beguinage of Bruges.
The project aims to develop a comprehensive master plan for the restoration and revitalization of the historic Beguinage site. Through detailed research and analysis of the site and its buildings, this master plan will serve as the foundation for the systematic restoration of the individual houses.
Addressing Urgent Restoration Needs
The Beguinage site requires significant restoration work, as many buildings suffer from structural deficiencies and physical shortcomings. These issues lead to poor living conditions for residents, highlighting the urgent need for a thorough investigation to address both construction and environmental challenges. Given the direct impact of these factors on overall comfort and structural integrity, it is crucial to map and evaluate them in detail.
The city is committed to a sustainable, high-quality approach to restoration, aligning with its 2050 climate goals. This initiative aims to dramatically enhance living comfort, ensuring the homes meet modern housing standards while simultaneously preserving and elevating their historical significance.
Phased Analysis and Implementation
Before any restoration work begins, a comprehensive pre-study and analysis of each property is essential. These findings will inform a detailed master plan and guide the phased restoration process. The analysis will also explore opportunities for reprogramming the site to integrate new uses alongside residential purposes. These uses will complement the unique atmosphere of the Beguinage, enhancing rather than disrupting its character.
